If you are looking to make a special hiking route in the weekend and around Aranjuez, we recommend the one that will take you to the Oreja Castle (and its small village) that, although abandoned, still survive on their feet after more than a thousand years.
The castle is on top of a promontory or great cliff from which you can see the towns of Colmenar de Oreja, Aranjuez, Ontígola and even Madrid. For centuries, since this castle was built in the ninth century on a site that the Romans called Aurelia, It was the scene of clashes between Christians and Muslims during the Middle Ages. Clashes border, because the site was especially strategic to control the area.
When the fighting ended, the castle and the small town – about a hundred meters away – went into private hands and over time it was abandoned until the last neighbor left in 1959.
However, the main tower of the castle, a part of the village and the castle still survives Hermitage of Asunción de Nuestra Señora where a small pilgrimage is celebrated every August 15 as before.
Stage of the movie The Man Who Killed Don Quijote
The area has regained visibility because it has been the scene of some scenes of The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, film directed by Terry Guillian, with a great cast and won two Goyas. For Guillian, this production was the end of two decades of failed attempts to finish his personal vision of the utopian hero of La Mancha.
In addition to the image above, the film has scenes in the "city of Oreja": shots from the road that comes from Ocaña and the main street.
