Everything you need to know about small dogs

Many are adopters who are sure they want a small dog.

A small dog is not only cheaper than a medium and / or large dog, but the majority of society is much more tolerant of small dogs when it comes to sharing space.

I mean pet-friendly places: many accommodations allow dogs but usually put a weight limit, the airline companies also, in some restaurant terraces allow their entry but much more if they are small, even when renting a home a small dog is seen with better eyes than a large one.

Now, many adopters sin of falling into the error of humanizing small dogs, in much greater percentage than in large dogs, creating in them, the one known as small dog syndrome.

The small dog syndrome is characterized by dominance behaviors, phobias, anxiety and even aggressiveness in smaller dogs, the result of that humanization.

No adopter of a Mastiff, for example, would be allowed to carry it in his arms or in his purse, right? Why does it happen with small breed dogs if they are the same species?

A big mistake that has a detrimental effect on the physical and emotional state of the small dog.

What is considered a small dog

Within the group of small dog breeds, we find two distinct groups:

  • Small dogs: they are dogs that weigh between 3 and 9 kilos.
  • Toy dogs: they are dogs that weigh between 3 and 5 kilos but that their breed standard usually weighs more. They are raised to make them with dwarfism because they are more cute for sale.
  • Teacup dogs: they are dogs created in the most cruel way in order to obtain great benefits from their sale. We talk about dogs that do not exceed 1800 grams and have a very delicate health.

As you can see, the world of dogs is very lucrative, that is why, when choosing a small dog, it is better to be guided by the standards of each breed according to the International Canine Federation.

In this way you will not promote the artificial breeding of these dogs that usually have many health problems: dwarfism, hydrocephalus, underdevelopment of organs, fragility in bones, anxiety, etc.

Advantages and disadvantages of small dogs

As I said before, a small dog is usually better valued by society when it comes to sharing space with it.

It is also true that annually it is cheaper than a large dog.

They adapt very well to an apartment, however, that does not mean that it does not leave it.

Small dogs usually have a fairly high energy, so it is advisable to take them out for a walk and provide them with enough physical activity to become balanced dogs.

Some examples of small dogs with high energy: Chihuahua, Yorkshire Terrier, Pomeranian, Poodle, etc.

On the other hand, some examples of small dogs with low energy: Pug or Carlino, French Bulldog, Cavalier King Charles, Shih Tzu, etc.

As you can see, having a small breed dog can be more comfortable, as long as we do not fall into the error of humanizing, because otherwise, it will develop excessive barking behavior, escapism, destruction, anxiety, etc.

The education of the dog and having its vital needs covered are keys to a perfect coexistence.
